The mystery of the unselectable "Hide Safari" lies in having the Safari window maximised or not. However, my Safari problem has been partially solved. I have solved my problem with Callnote though not by your suggested method - right clicking gives nothing. I suppose both Spotlight and Alfred don't search some places unless specifically directed, but I looked at preferences for them both and couldn't figure out how to alter them to get them to search absolutely everywhere.) So when Spotlight failed to find Callnote in Library > Extensions by starting with Macintosh HD, I got it to search starting with Library instead of Macintosh HD: then it found Callnote.kext. Before I'd done this I already new about the location of Callnote.kext in Library > Extensions. pkg file and it did the same when I invoked Spotlight in the menu bar - which gave me no option of where to search so I suppose it defaults to Macintosh HD. (By the way, this is something I don't get about Spotlight: in Finder I asked it to search for Callnote in Macintosh HD and all it came back with was the. You gave me the idea to look in extension folders elsewhere when I didn't find it in your suggested location, but I had to look manually since neither Spotlight nor Alfred found Callnote.kext, though they both found the. It was there as Callnote.kext I deleted it and restarted and it did not reappear in the Sound preferences. Thanks - your suggestion led me to get rid of Callnote in the input and output device windows of Sound System Preferences, but it wasn't in System > Library > Extensions but was in Library > Extensions.
